For the first time since the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Washington Capitals will face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins. What’s so significant about that you might ask? Oh, it’s just the second time in their careers that Cap’s star, Alex Ovechkin, and Pens’ star, Sidney Crosby will go head to head in a playoff series. The last time that ended in a thrilling seven game series in which, the Penguins prevailed and eventually went on to win the Stanley Cup against the Detroit Red Wings. That second round series prior to the Eastern Conference Final, and Stanley Cup final was highlighted by a game six win by the Caps in which Crosby and Ovechkin both recorded hat tricks. The two faces of the NHL squaring off and putting on an absolute show. With both men now seven years older, and in the midst of the prime of their respected careers, we get another chance to see them go at it. It’s what the NHL needs. Trust me, there is still time for the Jack Eichel vs. Connor McDavid rivalry to build over the coming years, but with Crosby and Ovechkin both at their peak there is no guarantee we will ever see them face off in the playoffs again. Crosby has had the upper edge throughout his career with his two Olympic Gold Medals and Stanley Cup, but Ovechkin is hungry; A prolific, once in a generation goal scorer who is explosive and exciting to watch. It’s a Gretzkey vs. Lemieux, Howe vs. Richard; this is an absolute treat of a series. Buckle up hockey fans. It’s going to be fun.
