All the way back in 1977, was the first time we ever set our eyes on the galaxy’s most famous weapon. Obi-Wan Kenobi handed Luke Skywalker his father’s blue-bladed jedi lightsaber. Obi-Wan tells Luke that a lightsaber is a “more elegant weapon for a more civilized age.”
Anakin first uses a blue-bladed lightsaber that looks very similar in Attack of the Clones, but it gets cut in half in the droid factory on Geonosis as pictured below. Anakin then uses a green one in the Geonosian arena and to duel Count Dooku afterward.
The first canonical appearance of this weapon is in the clone wars cartoon. Anakin chops a billion battle droids with it, fights the traitor Barriss Offee to defend his padawan Ahsoka Tano, and duels Count Dooku many times during the clone wars.
In Revenge of the Sith a ton of important things happen with this weapon. First, Anakin kills the Sith Lord Count Dooku with it. During Mace Windus arrest on Chancellor Palpatine, Anakin cuts of Mace Windu’s right arm off leaving him to fall to his death on Coruscant before Palpatine uses his sith lightning to throw him out the window. In the following of those events, Anakin turns into Darth Vader and leads an attack on the jedi temple, killing numerous younglings and jedi masters and padawans. He then uses the weapon to duel with his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, but ultimately fails and Kenobi takes the weapon back with him to Tattooine where he will watch over Anakin’s son Luke Skywalker.
In A New Hope, Luke Skywalker never uses the lightsaber as a weapon against enemies, but he does train with it on the Millennium Falcon with Obi-Wan teaching him how to tune in with the force. In The Empire Strikes Back , Luke Skywalker gets captured by a wampa, and uses telekinesis through the force to move the lightsaber to him to free himself and cut off the wampa`s arm and escape. Luke also uses it to cut open the underside of the AT-AT walker and throw the thermal detonator inside and destroy the imperial walker.
On Cloud City, Luke uses the weapon to duel Darth Vader, who he does not know is his true father yet. Vader toys with Luke during the fight and eventually chops off Luke`s hand leaving his hand and the lightsaber falling through the shaft in Cloud City.
The next appearance of this lightsaber is in The Force Awakens where Maz Kanata has had it stored in her basement in a wooden chest. In one of the trailers for this movie, we saw a shot of Maz passing the lightsaber to an unknown person, most likely Leia, but this was ultimately not included in the movie.
We still do not know how or when Maz got the weapon, but that story may be told in the future. Rey is called to the weapon while she is in Maz Kanatas castle, leading her to to it. She touches it has a vision, and runs away from everyone after seeing the vision. After that, Finn uses the weapon to kill his former fellow stormtroopers. Finn then had to use the weapon to fight off Kylo Ren on Starkiller Base, but then Finn gets beaten pretty wounded badly by Kylo. Rey uses the force to call the weapon to her hand and fight Kylo with it. Rey calls on the Force and messes up Kylo pretty badly in the duel, showing how powerful she is in the force when she taps into it.
This lightsaber doesn’t hold the same weight to all of star wars as a R2-D2 or C3PO, because it is not featured in The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, or Return of the Jedi, but it is very important. I have a feeling Luke Skywalker will still have his green one from Return of the Jedi in episode 8, while he will probably pass the more famous one down to Rey. We will almost surely see this weapon in Colin Trevorrow’s episode 9 and maybe in the next trilogy if they decide to go forward instead of backwards with the story.
